She graduated with the highest academic honors in all three graduate programs. In 2024, she earned a contracting officer warrant. She resides in Germany.

    In journalism, you have to go where the story takes you. And, when her story took her to New York City, Brooks Brunson ’14 didn’t miss a beat.

    Now the audience engagement editor at New York Public Radio, Brunson began her career in journalism as a communication major at the College, working her way from an internship at Charleston City Paper to her first job at The Post and Courier, where she eventually became the audience and digital operations editor.

    She moved to the Big Apple when The New Yorker scooped her up, making her the manager of its audience development. She was the lead on multiple projects for the publication, including curating the daily cartoons on Instagram. Then, in 2022, New York Public Radio hired her to oversee social, search and newsletter strategy.

    Since then, she has continued finding innovative ways to tell stories on digital platforms and developing strategies to best serve her audiences.

    AFTER FINISHING IN SECOND PLACE a few times in the Best Private Chef category in Charleston City Paper’s annual “Best of Charleston” contest, Lauren Furey ’19 finally finished in the top spot in May. It also coincided with her receiving the Distinguished Hospitality and Tourism Management Alumni Award from the College, as well as the release of the second season of Now We’re Cookin’ with Chef Lauren Furey on scetv.org and its digital platforms. In the 15-minute segments, Furey shows viewers how to create tasty, locally sourced dishes with guest chefs, entrepreneurs, mentors and family members who have shaped her culinary journey. (SCETV will broadcast both seasons on the network later this year.)

    Furey is not only the star; she’s also the producer, while simultaneously running her private chef business full time. “Producing involves wearing many hats,” she says, ticking off responsibilities that include writing the script, lining up guests, designing the set and developing recipes, of course. “I am grateful for such a rewarding experience.”
